Amelia Godward DEAKIN (1889-1974)

Amelia Godward DEAKIN was the daughter of George Deakin and Elizabeth Deakin (née Davies). Amelia was born in Stockport, Cheshire, on 7 September 1889.

After leaving school Amelia trained as a teacher. She married Evan HOWELL (b. 23 January 1884) in Stockport, in 1921. Evan was also a teacher and by 1939 was a head teacher at a school in Lancashire. They had one daughter, Margaret E. Howell, who was born in Bury, Lancashire on 29 September 1924.

Amelia died at her home, 10 Highland Road, Charlton Kings, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on 6 July 1974.

Amelia and Evan’s daughter, Margaret, read History at St Hilda’s College, Oxford. Her book, Regalian Right in Medieval England, resulted from postgraduate research in the University of London, and she also published several articles on the ecclesiastical and political history of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Her career in education included the headship of Nuneaton High School and a principal lectureship at the College of St Paul and St Mary, Cheltenham. Margaret never married and died in Oxford on 23 February 2023.
