Martha Elizabeth DEAKIN (1866-1960)

Martha Elizabeth DEAKIN was the daugther of  Samuel Pownall DEAKIN and Sarah Ann SIDEBOTTOM. Martha was born in 1866, Wigan, Lancashire.

In the 1881 Census, Martha is recorded as a ‘Cotton Weaver’, living at 13 Wignall Street, Wigan, with her mother, Sarah and her 7 brothers and sisters and also as a ‘Cotton Weaver’ in the 1891 Census living with her parents and brother and 4 sisters at 49 Corporation Street, Wigan.

Martha married John TAYLOR in 1891 in Wigan. Martha and John had the following children:

1. Bessie Jane TAYLOR, b. 1893, Wigan
2. Georgina Deakin TAYLOR, b. 1897, Wigan, d. 1983

John worked as a ‘Traveller’ (salesman) for W.R. Deakin Limited and in 1903, William, Martha and family were living at 227 Gidlow Lane, Wigan. 

Martha’s husband, John, died aged 88, on 2 December 1958 at 276 Wigan Lane, Wigan. John is buried in Lower Ince Cemetery (Plot: Non Con, A 456), Wigan. Martha passed away, aged 93, on 29 January 1960 at Briars Hey, Gathurst Len, Shevington, Lancashire.
