Harriet DEAKIN (1824-1900)

Harriet DEAKIN was the daughter of George DEAKIN (1792-1863) and Rachael DEAKIN (née GRIMSHAW) (1793-1855). Harriet was born on 26 February 1824 in Halifax, Yorkshire, and was baptised on 4 April 1824 at St John the Baptist, Yorkshire.

Harriet was an accomplished singer and performed in many concerts with her cousin Eliza DEAKIN and aunt, Mary Ann DEAKIN in Buxton, Derbyshire.

In the 1851 census, Harriet is recorded as living in Buxton, Derbyshire, with her grandfather, George Deakin. Harriet was working with George, a Grain Grocer, Market Place, Buxton. The 1851 census records:

  • George Deakin, 80 years, widowed, Grain Grocer
  • Harriett Deakin, granddaughter, 25 years, Grain Grocer
  • Hannah Deakin, 10 years, Scholar

Harriet married Joseph MIL(L)WARD (b. Longnor), a widower, on 24 October 1867 in Buxton Church, Derbyshire, and the couple moved to Longnor just outside Buxton.

In the 1871 census the couple are recorded as living at Pleasant Cottage, Longnor:

  • Joseph Millward, 47 years, Returning Officer and Registrar
  • Harriet Millward, 45 years
  • Sarah Ollerenshaw, 15 years, General Servant/Domestic

By 1881, Harriet and Joseph had moved to Ticknall (Tickenhall), a small village about 50 miles south of Buxton . Joseph, died aged 63, in Ticknall and Harriet died, aged 76, in Ticknall on 22 May 1900 and she was buried on 25 May 1900.
