William DAKIN/DEAKIN (1808 – 1890)

William DAKIN (also spelt DEAKIN) was the son of George Dakin/Deakin and Bridget Dakin/DEAKIN (née Townsend). He was born c1808.

William was a musician and an accomplished cornet player.

William married Elizabeth MYCOCK on 27 August 1832 in Bakewell, Derbyshire in the presence of William’s brother, Robert. William and Elizabeth had the following children:

  1. Mary Ann Deakin, b. 1834, Brampton, Derbyshire, m. James FARMER, 28 November 1864, Bakewell, d. 1 June 1881, Buxton, Derbyshire
  2. William Deakin Jnr, b. 1845, Buxton
  3. Ellen Deakin, b 1850, Buxton, m. Silas STEVENS1, 27 January 1870, Buxton,

In 1851, the family were living on the London Road, Buxton and in the 1861 William is recorded in the census as living at Buxton Cote Heath:

  • William Deakin, 52 years, Musician
  • Elizabeth Deakin, 57 years, b. Chesterfield, Derbyshire
  • Mary Ann Deakin, daughter, 27 years, Assistant at home, b. Buxton
  • Ellen Deakin, daughter, 11 years, Scholar

William’s wife, Elizabeth, died on 25 July 1869 and she was buried in the churchyard at St John The Baptist Church, Buxton. The inscription on her headstone reads:

Who DIED July 25th 1869
AGED 66 YEARS
“Not lost, but gone before”

By 1871, William had moved to live with his daughter Ellen who had married (married name Stevens). And in the 1881 census he is recorded as living with his daughter Mary Ann at 29 Bath Street, Buxton:

  • Ada Farmer, daughter, 12 years, Scholar
  • Elizabeth Farmer, daughter, 11 years, Scholar
  • William Deakin, 72 years, Musician
  • William Deakin Jnr, 36 years, Musician

William died on 19 May 1890. Probate was granted on 10 July 1890, total effects £56 1s 5d.

Notes:

  1. Silas and Ellen Stevens had the following children: William Deakin Stevens, Lena Stevens, Arthur Stevens and Percy Stevens. In 1881, the family were living at 4 Pickering Street, Harpurhey, Manchester. Silas Stevens was a House Painter.
