Sarah Ellen BASHFORTH was born in 1878 in Barnsley, Yorkshire, and was baptised on 28 February 1878 at St John The Baptist Church, Barnsley, Yorkshire. Sarah was the eldest daughter of Thomas Bashforth (an iron moulder) and Elizabeth Bashforth (née Ashworth).
By 1891, the family had moved to Wigan, Lancashire and aged 19, Sarah married John Hartley HODSON in early 1898 (or late 1897) in Wigan (at Wigan Registry Office or Registrar attended).
Her husband John, set up Deakin & Hodson with William R. Deakin. The partnership was later dissolved and in the 1911 census, Sarah is recorded as assisting her husband, John, a yeast dealer.
John passed away, aged 71, on 25 January 1939 at 1 Falkland Road, Southport Lancashire.
Sarah died, aged 89, on 20 March 1967, at 126 Apply Lane, Apply Bridge near Wigan. In her will she left effects (£3551) to her nephews Ronald Lindsay Bashforth and Cyril Denys Bashforth (1923-2000).
Sarah is buried in Liverpool Road Cemetery, Birkdale (Plot: Section L, Row 1), alongside her husband, John.
