George DAKIN/DEAKIN (1771-1852)

George DEAKIN (also spelt DAKIN) was the son of Robert DEAKIN. George was born in 1771 in Taddington, Derbyshire.

On 18 January 1790, George married Bridget TOWNSEND in Taddington. Born in 1767, (baptised 15 November 1767), Bridget was the daughter of Ralph TOWNSEND and Alice TOWNSEND (née GREEN)1. George and Bridget had the following children:

  1. Mary Ann DAKIN/DEAKIN, b. 1790 m. William ELSE
  2. George DAKIN/DEAKIN, b. 1792, Taddington, near Buxton, Derbyshire, d. 1863, Buxton
  3. Robert DAKIN/DEAKIN, b. 1795, Taddington, d. 1863, Buxton
  4. William DAKIN/DEAKIN, b. 1808

Bridget died in Buxton, aged 61, on 16 September 1836 and she was buried in the churchyard at St John The Baptist Church, Buxton, on 19 September 1836.

In the 1851 Census, George is recorded as living in the Market Place, Buxton, near to his son Robert and niece, Eliza Deakin:

  • George Deakin, 80 years, widowed, Grain Grocer (b. Taddington)
  • Harriett Deakin, granddaughter, 25 years, Grain Grocer (b. Halifax, Yorkshire, daughter of )
  • Hannah Deakin, servant, 10 years (b. Stockport, Cheshire)

and also in the Market Place, Buxton:

George died in Buxton on 1 March 1852, aged 81 years. It was reported at the time:

On Monday last, George Deakin, aged 81, for nearly 70 years fruiterer at Buxton. He was the father of the late Mrs. Else, formerly Miss Mary Ann Deakin, and grandfather of Miss Eliza DEAKIN, both of the Royal Academy of Music; and the whole of his family are noted for their musical powers, his son William being the talented Cornopean player in the Duke of Devonshire’s band at Buxton. Miss Eliza Deakin and her cousin Miss Harriet Deakin, have frequently sang before and delighter the most fashionable audience of Buxton and elsewhere.

George was buried in the churchyard at St John The Baptist Church, Buxton. His two sons, Robert Deakin/Dakin and George Deakin were later buried alongside him. The inscription on the headstone reads:
